Bent Festival 2009 - Workshops II

April 18, 12:00 PM

Workshops will take place during the day on Friday and Saturday. Some workshops are for beginners, some are for more advanced students. Some workshops are free, others require a materials fee. In past years, many of the more advanced workshops have sold out, so consider buying tickets ahead of time by following the links below.

Lineup

12:00PM
VBLANK / Wil Lindsay : Beginning Microcontroller Programming and Circuit Bending
Tickets ($90)
This workshop will be a beginner-level overview of basic electronics, components, sensors, and the Arduino microcontroller platform. No knowledge of electronics or circuit-bending is needed. Participants will build their own microcontroller platforms and program them to perform various tasks. The workshop will include a general discussion on how microcontrollers (such as the one participants will receive) can be used for music creation, modding, bending and general electronic havoc. The price of the workshop will include everything you need to build your own breadboard based Arduino compatible board, a programming cable, and a bag of parts to build several simple projects such as a photo theremin. Participants will only need to bring a Mac/PC/Linux laptop with an available USB port. All other parts and tools will be provided.

12:00PM
Peter Edwards of Casperelectronics : Beginning Circuit Bending - All Ages!
Tickets (FREE)
NO TICKETS NEEDED. JUST SHOW UP!
Got a cool new SK1 mod to show off? Never held a soldering iron before? Come on down! Toys, tools and materials will be available for free or for a small fee. Professional circuit bender and circuit bending teacher Peter Edwards of casperelectronics will be covering bending basics and beyond. Bring toys to bend, bring a work in progress, just come and watch. Open to all ages and all experience levels.

3:00PM
NO CARRIER / Don Miller : glitchNES - Soft Circuit-Bending on the NES
Tickets (FREE)
NO TICKETS NEEDED. JUST SHOW UP!
glitchNES is an open source software project by NO CARRIER (Don Miller) for the Nintendo Entertainment System. This software causes graphical glitches similar to hardware circuit-bending. In this workshop Miller will explain the inner-workings of the NES PPU (Picture Processing Unit) and how it can be abused and exploited to create stunning patterns and effects.

4:00PM
Todd Michael Bailey : From Circuitbending to Circuit Design
Tickets (FREE)
NO TICKETS NEEDED. JUST SHOW UP!
So you've gotten good at soldering and using a dremel tool and are wondering what's next? Or perhaps you're wondering how you can better develop new bends, or even build something of your own? This lecture will be given under the (admittedly false) supposition that inside every circuitbender is an engineer straining to get out. Circuitbenders often have valuable skills which engineers do not -- willingness to fail, good hands-on technique, a DIY aesthetic -- however they typically don't know a BJT from a hole in the ground. This lecture is about filling in those gaps and making yourself a really dangerous electronics geek: One Who Knows What They're Doing. This workshop will be in lecture format. Bring a notebook and a pen. I will touching on skills and avenues necessary to pursue your own research. I will also be using a piece of hardware I designed (an audio sampler) as an example of how the design process works, and also how you can jump from understanding something familiar (like, say, an SK-1) to something general (like any other audio sampler). (Free lecture)

4:00PM
Jamie Allen & Kazuhiro Jo : Chiptune Marching Band
Tickets ($30)
VERY FAMILY FRIENDLY! Chiptune Marching Band is a workshop and performance. It involves people from all walks of life making electronic sounds with one another, out in the world and in the open air. Armed with the tools and know-how for hacking together alternative-power systems and square wave sensor circuits, we take to the streets. Workshop leaders: Jamie Allen makes art and sound with my head and hands. His work in digital media, music, performance and public art seeks to create physical relationships between people and with media: http://heavyside.net/. Kazuhiro Jo is a Japanese sound artist/researcher with background in acoustic design and in interaction design. He is currently working as a Visiting Research Fellow at Digital Media, Culture Lab, Newcastle University. He is also a member of The SINE WAVE ORCHESTRA , Monalisa , AEO, and a co-organizer of dorkbot Tokyo .

6:00PM
Rob Hordijk : miniRungler
Tickets ($30)
The miniRungler is an analog box with three control knobs, a volume pot and three outputs. It produces a wave signal that is modulatable in a chaotic way by the control knobs, plus a stepped chaotic CV pattern signal. Interesting feature about the miniRungler is that it has a rhythmic aspect to it. It continues a tradition set by the Buchla Source of Uncertainty, the Wogglebug, etc. It uses off the shelve components and is the perfect kit to start DIY'ing or to expand one's range of bent instruments.
